A weekly series of Grady students highlighted for their exciting and innovative internship opportunities. Written by Yarbrough-Grady intern Paula Bryant.
Aalia Shaheed, a Broadcast Journalism and Spanish major set to graduate in May 2013, spent her summer in Washington, D.C., as a general assignment news intern for NBC News.
Throughout the summer Shaheed utilized her Grady experience and classes to execute a variety of projects at NBC. From digitizing Romney press conferences to attending hearings on Capitol Hill, Shaheed received unique hands-on experience at her internship.
While at NBC, Shaheed had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of shows like "Andrea Mitchell Reports" and "The Daily Rundown" hosted by Chuck Todd. She shadowed "NBC Nightly News" producers, getting a chance to see how intense television news can be on both the network and cable sides.
"Every week the newsroom was going crazy with exciting new developments, from Attorney General Holder's contempt ruling to the passing of health care reform," Shaheed said. "The upcoming presidential election meant there was a lot of work to be done in the office. Each day held something totally new for me — I even got to meet Rep. Nancy Pelosi!"
At the end of the summer Shaheed's commitment and Grady experience paid off when one of her stories was published on "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams." Click here to view the story.
