HMJ graduate students have exceptional access to national and international leaders in journalism, public health, health policy and biomedical research – due to the strong public service mission of UGA's Knight Chair. Interdisciplinary collaborations enable Professor Thomas to bring experts to UGA for a range of lectures and discussions. Off campus, professional development events for ethnic and traditional media are joint ventures with media organizations, foundations or public agencies.

April 8, 2013 - Carol Etheringtion, MSN, R.N.
By the time Carol Etherington responded to New York after 9/11, she had traveled the world for three decades - assisting people devastated by war and natural disaster as well as violence within our own country. In the classroom at Vanderbilt University, she challenges students and providers from across the disciplines to develop a grounded and realistic perspective on global health, particularly among the world's most vulnerable populations.

March 18, 2013 - Benjamin J. Park, MD
Dr. Benjamin Park came to the CDC in 2002 expecting to track fungal infections in places where HIV/AIDS makes people susceptible to them, or in trauma patients where sudden, flesh-eating fungus infections can lead to amputation or death in a matter of days. What he did not anticipate was leading the epidemiologic investigation into the largest and possibly the deadliest healthcare-associated outbreak in U.S. history. He and his colleagues quickly traced the 2012 fungal meningitis outbreak to contaminated steroid medication, but the story continues to unfold. Hear it from a disease detective on the scene.

February 11, 2013 - José Esparza, MD, PhD
José Esparza has been battling viruses that make people sick since he was a medical student in Maracaibo, Venezuela. For decades he's worked around the world, seeking to slow the spread of dangerous viruses from Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis to HIV. He's played a critical role in the quest for a vaccine to prevent AIDS, earlier with the World Health Organization and now with the Gates Foundation.

The 2012 Voices from the Vanguard series continues on February 21 with a lecture by Sheila West, an expert on trachoma and blindess based at the famous Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins University.

March 20, 2012 - Dr. Marc Laforce, meningitis vaccine initiative
Dr. Marc LaForce, who has spent the past 10 years developing a meningitis vaccine for Africa that is both effective and inexpensive, will appear March 20, 2012.

April 10, 2012 - Matthew LeBreton, Global Virus Forecasting Initiative (based in Cameroon)
The 2012 series concludes on April 10 with field biologist and biodiversity expert Matt LeBreton of the Global Virus Forecasting Initiative, who looks for emerging infectious scourges among bush meat hunters and indigenous populations in Cameroon.

April 19-22, 2012 – Health Journalism 2012
Health Journalism 2012 – the 14th annual conference of the Association of Health Care Journalists – is set for April 19-22 at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel. Join more than 500 other journalists as they take part in skill-building workshops, sit in on panel discussions and visit area research sites.
