MSCNE09
Management Seminar for College News Editors

Congratulations on your selection to the MSCNE Class of 2009. As a top editor at your campus newspaper, you will meet about 50 student editors at this leadership workshop on July 26-31 at The University of Georgia.

Your adviser has reserved your spot in the seminar, and now we need information from you to help prepare the program. Please complete and submit the Editor Survey on our Web site no later than Friday, June 12. (to Editor Survey)

MSCNE09 will focus on developing your leadership skills and explore ways that Web sites and interactive journalism are expanding your roles and responsibilities as editor and your potential to reach readers.

This year's program will include presenters from the Student Press Law Center, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, CNN and other news organizations. Student editors also will serve as presenters, sharing success stories and best examples.

The seminar will begin with an orientation and opening dinner at 7 p.m., Sunday, July 26, at the Holiday Inn in Athens. It will conclude at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 31, at the Hotel Midtown in Atlanta. We arranged Friday night lodging and request that you schedule departure flights on Saturday.

Your MSCNE09 registration fee covers six nights lodging, most meals and all workshop materials. Transportation will be provided from the Athens Holiday Inn to the Hotel Midtown in Atlanta on Thursday. Student editors are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the seminar. More information on travel arrangements is provided below.

COMPLETE THE EDITOR SURVEY

We need some bio and contact information from you. Please complete and submit the online survey no later than Friday, June 12. Make sure you include current and summer e-mail and phone contact info. ( to Editor Survey)

COORDINATE SUMMER WORK / WORKSHOP SCHEDULES

Coordinate workshop attendance with summer employment plans. Notify your employer that you will be attending this leadership workshop on July 26-31. If your employer needs additional information, have him/her contact MSCNE director Cecil Bentley at (706) 542-4993 or cbentley@grady.uga.edu

  • The Big Heat – coverage of the biggest campus controversy of the year

  • Front pages – your best, your worst (if you dare)

REVIEW AND BRING WRITTEN GUIDELINES

Check with your adviser on existing guidelines and policies for your newspaper and Web site. Do you have a mission statement? Do you have a code of ethics? Do you have easy-to-understand job descriptions? Bring a copy of the following to the workshop to share and discuss with fellow editors:

1. Your newspaper’s mission statement and code of ethics
2. Job descriptions for staff positions
3. Policies for corrections, letters to editor, columns and other reader-submitted items
4. Local news coverage policies, beat descriptions, local style manual

RECOMMENDED ATTIRE

Casual attire is appropriate for your week in Athens. The day in Atlanta at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and CNN calls for professional business attire.

You might want to bring a light jacket or sweater to wear as the classrooms tend to be cool in the summer.

TRAVEL / TRANSPORTATION

If you FLY, we suggest your destination be Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport. AAA Airport Express Shuttle provides transportation to Athens.

Your stop in downtown Athens will be the Holiday Inn, 197 E. Broad St. Tickets are sold one-way only and cost $45. You need to make your own reservation. Check the AAA Web site at www.aaaairportexpress.com for map, schedules and reservations. Please reference your plane arrival to coincide with the shuttle schedules.

If you DRIVE, you will receive free parking at the Holiday Inn in Athens and at the Hotel Midtown in Atlanta.

Please NOTE on Thursday, July 24, you will follow the charter bus to Atlanta and upon arrival at the Hotel Midtown in Atlanta you will need to valet park (FREE) during your stay.
