Roughly 500 high school journalists and advisers attended the GSPA Awards Ceremony at the University of Georgia on April 29. More than 200 awards were given out for newspaper, newsmagazine, yearbook, literary magazine and broadcast.

Celebrate another year of scholastic journalism at the 2011 GSPA
Awards Ceremony, held Thursday, April 28 at noon. The 82nd annual
event will be held at the University of Georgia's Tate Student Center
and features a keynote address from Patch.com regional editor Perry
Parks. More than 200 awards will be distributed, recognizing the best
high school journalism in the state. Registration is $18 per person
and includes a catered lunch. Registration deadline is Friday, April

GSPA is again spotlighting achievement in several often unheralded
areas: Adviser of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Community
Service, First-Year Adviser, Freedom of the Press, Perseverance, Start-
Up and Turnaround. The purpose of the awards is to give recognition to
those instrumental in the success of a high school publication.
Entries for the eight achievement awards will require an essay of no
more than 400 words describing why the person/staff should be
considered for the award. Supporting materials, such as newspaper
copy, broadcast video or letters of recognition can be included but
are not required. The postmark deadline is Friday, April 1.

We are now accepting portfolios for the GSPA Junior Champion Journalist award. This award recognizes the top high school junior journalist in the state. Entrants must submit a comprehensive portfolio showcasing their work, a transcript and two letters of recommendation. The prize is $100 and a scholarship into the Georgia Journalism Academy (June 12-18) this summer. Click here for the entry form and instructions.

The Georgia Champion Journalist is awarded each year to a senior student who has demonstrated a wide array of journalistic skills and experience, achieved success inside and outside the classroom, and plans to pursue a journalism career in college. The state winner earns a $150 prize from GSPA, and moves on to the national competition sponsored by the Journalism Education Association where they will be considered among Champion Journalists from all 50 states for more than $10,000 in cash prizes. Application deadline is Feb. 15.

Essay Contest, sponsored by the Cox Institute for Newspaper Management
Studies and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Cash prizes totaling $450 will be awarded to the top essays, and the
contest is open to students who are members of any GSPA member staff.
The postmark deadline is Jan. 28.

University of Georgia's Tate Center. Sessions will be offered in
newspaper/newsmagazine, yearbook, literary magazine and broadcasting.
Sessions will be held 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 22) and
8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 23). Cost is $20/person for
a two-day registration, $15/person for a Friday-only registration.
Advance registration deadline is Sept. 17.

GSPA is conducting a research study on media consumption of teenagers,
their expectations for college journalism programs and their outlook
on the future of journalism. All journalism staffs are invited to
participate in the study, and each staff that has at least 10 students
participate will receive a $25 GSPA coupon. Parental permission slips
must be received by the GSPA office before students may partake in the
online survey. Completed forms may be faxed to the GSPA office at
706-542-7931 or sent to GSPA study, Grady College, 120 Hooper Street,
Athens, GA 30602-3018.
