The Grady College offers two graduate degrees: the Master of Arts in Journalism & Mass Communication (M.A.) and the Ph.D. in Mass Communication (Ph.D.). The Grady College also offers a Graduate Certificate in Media Industry Research available to enrolled Grady graduate students. Both degree programs are designed to develop your critical thinking, understanding of theory and methodology, and scholarship/research competence, and to prepare you to conduct basic and applied research, to critique and use research produced by others, and for advancement as a professional communicator or mass communication educator/scholar. Master's specialties are offered in advertising, journalism, health and medical journalism, mass media studies, public relations, and telecommunications. The Media Industry Research Certificate program is designed to provide the opportunity for Grady graduates to enter with full qualifications into the field of media industry research.

Grady graduates are working in leadership roles as professional communicators and serving on the faculties of major colleges and universities such as the: University of Alabama, Boston College, University of Florida, Louisiana State University, University of Minnesota, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Ohio State University, University of Oregon, Pennsylvania State University, University of Tennessee, and University of Texas.

Typically, we have about 80 graduate students on campus pursuing graduate degrees. Our students come from all regions of the United States and from many countries abroad. They are taught and mentored by graduate faculty renowned for their research and teaching.

The Grady College’s Ph.D. and MA programs in mass communication is designed to prepare scholars for academic careers in teaching and research, or for professional careers in industry or government. The program draws mainly on the resources and facilities of the College’s three departments: advertising/public relations, journalism, and telecommunications.
The curriculum is designed so that each student understands the foundational theories, research, and practices in mass communication. Students also select specific areas of focus that can include: advertising, health and medical journalism, media management and economics, digital networks, media history, media culture and criticism, international communication, public relations, persuasive communication, communication law, political communication, emerging digital media, and gaming.
