About: Anandam Kavoori’s current areas of interest are in narrative non-fiction and environmental journalism with a focus on Georgia and the South East.

Education

Study in A Second Discipline (Ecology), University of Georgia.

Ph.D., Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Maryland, College Park.

M.A Cultural Anthropology, Brandeis University, Mass.

Research Interests and Activities

Dr. Kavoori has worked in the areas of International Communication, New Media and Media Literacy. He is the author or editor of ten scholarly books and nearly 50 journal articles and book chapters. He has published scholarly articles in most major international journals including Media, Culture and Society, Journal of Communication, Global Media Journal, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Communication Monographs, Global Media and Communication, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Journal of International Communication, and International Journal of Cultural Studies. He is the recipient of the Asian Journal of Communication award in International Communication given at the AEJMC Conference in 2006.

He is also the author of two books of fiction, including a critically acclaimed novel, "The Children of Shahida".

Teaching Specialties

Dr. Kavoori teaches in the area of international journalism/communication, environmental journalism, transnational cultural studies and creative writing (fiction and non-fiction).

Experience

Dr. Kavoori has been a consultant to News Corporation, CNN International, Discovery Channel and Living Media and a faculty judge for The Peabody Awards for over twenty years. His columns have appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Times-Union, The Times of India, National Herald amongst numerous others, and he has been interviewed as a media expert by Cuban, Indian, Japanese, Spanish, Norwegian, Austrian, and American media outlets (including NPR, the Voice of America and the Associated Press). He has taught in summer programs in Cambodia, England (at Trinity College, Oxford University), Austria (at the University of Innsbruck) and Korea (Korea University). Before joining academia he was a journalist with media organizations in India and the United States.

Awards

He has held a Lilly Teaching Fellowship and has been twice selected for College Teaching Recognition.
