Session I

Introductions of instructors and participants.
Overview of the week.
Discussion of the goals for the workshop with the participants.

Session II

Discussion of models of journalism education around the world.
Introduction of a teaching assignment for the week.

Tuesday, February 22

Session 1

Designing the curriculum: What elements are critical components of a journalism curriculum?

Session 2

Designing the syllabus: What are the models? What should you tell students about the course?
Exercise on teaching objectives and assignments.

Session 3

How to create a unified curriculum.

Wednesday, February 23

Session 1

Basic approaches to teaching writing: Using critiques, reviews and questions.
How to critique student writing in ways that are supportive and constructive.

Sessions 2 & 3

Strategies for interactive-teaching and learning.

Using groups to foster active learning: Models of collaboration.
How to move from teaching to active learning in three stages: Modeling, practicing, doing.
Developing critical thinking: Teaching students to become problem-solvers.

Thursday, February 24

Sessions 1 & 2 will be created to cover topics, based on participant interests. Below is a list of possible topics. The list will be expanded based on ideas from the workshop.

1. How to teach students with different skill levels in the same classroom.
2. Teaching a multi-media writing course.
3. Teaching interviewing.
4. Getting students to focus their stories.
5. Writing for different audiences.
6. Teaching the writing of the lead.
7. News values: Traditional values and their limits.
8. Integrating technology into instruction.
9. Teaching how to communicate technical information in news stories.

Session 3

Teaching exercise: Each participant will present a sample assignment and strategy for its
implementation in a course of choice.

Friday, February 25

Session 1

Teaching exercise continued.

Session 2

Evaluating teaching: Discussion of options for classroom evaluation, including mid-course
evaluation.

Session 3

Conclusion and discussion of future needs.
Evaluation of workshop.
