Small Group Assignment: Planning for Disaster Coverage

 

Develop a plan to cover a disaster in your community for your media organization. Include the following elements.

  1. The disaster type covered by your plan.
  2. The type of media organization covered by the plan.
  3. The types of resources you will need. Include human resources (reporters, photographers, editors, subeditors), monetary (expenses to be budgeted) and equipment (helicopters, 4X4s, CB radios).
  4. Publication or broadcast backups in case your printing plant or offices or transmitters are unusable during the disaster.
  5. Stakeholders and how their needs will be met.
  6. A list of community resources you will need.
  7. An organizational plan, including allocation of the human resources (reporters, photographers) available.
  8. Any emergency communication plans.
  9. Advance training needs.
  10. Timeline.
