10:00 to 11:30 Session I. Introductions and general overview of the program

After the overview, participants will be asked to describe what they are currently writing about in the areas of environmental health and what they would like to accomplish in the workshop.

11:45 to 13:00 Session II. Generating story ideas about environmental health

What are the environmental health issues in Ukraine?

As part of this session, journalists will break into small groups and begin plans for covering environmental health issues in Ukraine.

13:00 to 14:00 Lunch

14:00 to 15:30 Session III. Finding sources for environmental health stories

How to locate official and unofficial sources of information in Ukraine and elsewhere.

15:45 to 17:00 Session IV. The role of the journalist in covering environmental health issues

How do you move from a passive to an active role in reporting.

10:00 to 11:30 Session V. Relationships between scientists & journalists.

What are the differences between the ways scientists and journalists do their work?

11:45 to 13:00 Session VI. Developing better relationships between scientists and journalists.

What can be done to make sure accurate and helpful information gets to the public?

14:00 to 15:30 Session VII. Risky communication I.

How journalists typically handle uncertainty.

15:45 to 17:00 Session VIII. Risky Communication II.

Public perceptions of risk.

What are the psychological roadblocks that can influence evaluation of evidence?

11:45 to 13:00 Session X. Report of group projects on coverage of environmental health issues in Ukraine

Groups created in the Session II will report on their plans.

13:00 to 14:00 Lunch

14:00 to 15:30 Session XI. Case studies of evaluation of evidence.

What two case studies from the U.S. suggest about good and bad ways of evaluating evidence.

15:45 to 17:00 Session XII. Evaluation of the workshop and closing comments and ceremony.
