| The U.S. Department of Education released an update on Dec. 9, 2008, clarifying the Family Educational Rights and Privacy. The recent interpretation suggests that colleges have been overly broad in interpreting FERPA and what constitutes “personally identifiable information from education records.” The DOE maintains that social security numbers and disciplinary records cannot be released, but directory information generally can be released. |
