By

Lee B. Becker and Joseph D. Graf

Abstract

Ever heard the one about Watergate causing an increase in journalism school enrollments? Or that university journalism schools enroll only students who are not smart enough to enter other fields of study –– particularly if those fields demand the use of numbers? Or that enrollments in journalism and related communication fields have grown and will continue to grow simply because of the increased importance of the mass media in American society? Or that pay for journalism and mass communication graduates is so poor that students would be better off selecting any other major?
