The Annual Survey of Journalism & and Mass Communication Graduates began in 1964 at the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund. The survey moved to Ohio State University in 1987 and to the University of Georgia in 1997.

The survey is directed by Dr. Lee B. Becker, a professor in the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia and director of the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research in the Grady College. Dr. Gerald M. Kosicki, a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at The Ohio State University, co-directed the enrollment survey with Dr. Becker while the survey was located at The Ohio State University and continues his collaboration on the survey today.

Until 1975, the graduate survey asked administrators of journalism programs to report on the employment experiences of their graduates. Since 1975, graduate survey data come from a national sample of graduates of journalism and mass communication programs. To be included in the sample, the graduates must have completed their studies at one of the programs in journalism and mass communication listed in either the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's Journalism Career and Scholarship Guide or the Journalism and Mass Communication Directory, published by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The graduate survey includes questions on the employment status of the graduates six months after graduation, on salary earned, and on related educational and job market experiences.

The Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Graduates operates with input from a Steering Committee composed of representatives of each of the survey sponsors. The Steering Committee meets each year, usually in August.

Professional Associations, Foundations, media corporations and others with an interest in the journalism and mass communication labor market are eligible for sponsorship. Those interested in sponsoring the Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Graduates should contact Dr. Lee B.
