History of the Enrollment Surveys
The Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Enrollments has operated at the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia since September of 1997. The survey is directed by Dr. Lee B. Becker, a professor in the Grady College and director of the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research in the Grady College.
The Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Enrollments traces its history back to 1937, when the first known survey of enrollments in journalism programs in the United States was conducted. Dr. Paul V. Peterson, emeritus professor of journalism at Ohio State, took over responsibility for the survey in 1968. Dr. Becker assumed responsibility for the survey upon Dr. Peterson's retirement in 1988.
Dr. Gerald M. Kosicki, professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at The Ohio State University, co-directed the enrollment survey with Dr. Becker while the survey was located at The Ohio State University and continues his collaboration on the survey today.
Data for the Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Enrollments come from a census of the heads of schools, departments and programs in journalism listed in the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's Journalism Career and Scholarship Guide or the Journalism and Mass Communication Directory, published by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Respondents report on enrollments, degrees granted and other characteristics of their programs.
The Annual Survey of Journalism & Mass Communication Enrollments operates with input from a Steering Committee composed of representatives of each of the survey sponsors. The Steering Committee meets each year, usually in August.
Professional Associations, Foundations, media corporations and others with an interest in the journalism and mass communication labor market are eligible for sponsorship.
