    Alumnus Crumbley Keynotes Spring Convocation


    Former senator and judge R. Alex Crumbley Jr. was keynote speaker for the Spring 2009 Convocation.

    Former state senator and Superior Court Judge R. Alex Crumbley Jr. (ABJ '64) delivered the keynote address to 373 Grady College students at the annual Spring & Summer Convocation held on Friday, May 8, at the Athens Classic Center.

    Crumbley, who first graduated with a degree in journalism before obtaining a law degree from the University of Georgia's School of Law, is a practicing attorney at Crumbley Law Firm in McDonough. He has had a distinguished career in law, state politics and government and was a recent recipient of Grady College's John Holliman Jr. Lifetime Achievement Alumni Award.

    In his convocation address, titled A Free Press and the Rule of Law: Protectors of Liberty, Crumbley told students that the professions of journalism and law have played a greater role in protecting the liberty of Americans than any other.

    Three distinguished alumni of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication were recognized at the 2009 Alumni Awards Ceremony held on Thursday, May 7, in the Drewry Room.

    R. Alex Crumbley Jr. (ABJ '64), Josh Jackson (ABJ '94) and Jennifer Rainey Marquez of (ABJ '00) were honored.

    Crumbley, of McDonough, was acknowledged as recipient of the John Holliman Jr. Award for Lifetime Achievement. Jackson, from Decatur, received the Henry W. Grady Award for Mid-Career Achievement, while New York City-based Marquez was presented the Dean John E. Drewry Award for Young Alumni Achievement.

    "These exceptional individuals demonstrate how Grady alumni carry the banner of achievement in journalism and mass communication forward into their professions," said E. Culpepper Clark, dean of the Grady College. "They and the alumni they represent are extremely valuable resources to the college. Their character, careers and service to the field teach and inspire."

    Jody B. Danneman, executive producer and president of Atlanta ImageArts, Inc., Marietta, has been awarded the Dean's Medal for Communication Leadership from the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

    Danneman, a 1988 telecommunication arts alumnus of the Grady College, is the third recipient of the medal and was honored in a ceremony held in Grady's Peabody Suite on Friday, April 24.

    The Grady College Dean's Medal was established in 2007 to honor an alumnus who plays a significant role in a communication event that rises to the status of case study in one of the journalism and mass communication disciplines.
