Faherty Laboratory Team Wins Research Award

Research conducted by the Michael J. Faherty Broadcast Management Laboratory research team won an award from the Media Management and Sales Division of the Broadcast Education Association.

Faherty Laboratory Coordinators Ann Hollifield and Dwight Brooks, and Laboratory Research Associate George Daniels received second place in the open paper competition for their paper “Television in Living Color: Ethnic Diversity in the Local Commercial Television Industry.”  The award was presented at the annual BEA convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in April.

The paper, which was based on the Faherty Laboratory’s growing database on broadcast industry employment, examined the changing levels of ethnic diversity in the local commercial television industry over the 27 years of FCC personnel regulation.  Specifically, the study examined changing levels of ethnic diversity in the industry across time, within specific job categories in the industry, and in comparison to other U.S. industries.  The study also examined the representation of specific minority groups in the local commercial television industry and distribution of individuals within those different ethnic groups across various job categories in television.

George Daniels presented the paper at the BEA conference in Las Vegas.
