Faherty Laboratory Welcomes A Romanian Broadcast Management Professor
University of Bucharest professor Madalina Balasescu joined the Michael J. Faherty Broadcast Management Laboratory for a month in Spring 2001 to exchange ideas about approaches to teaching broadcast and television news management.
Professor Balasescu, who is on the faculty of the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Bucharest in Romania, is developing graduate courses in broadcast management for her home university. During her month in Athens, she met regularly with Faherty Laboratory coordinators Dr. Ann Hollifield and Dr. Dwight Brooks to discuss ideas and exchange views about instructional materials and methods available for use in broadcast management courses. She also visited the Telecommunications 3310, Introduction to Telecommunications Programming and Management, and Telecommunications 4350, Broadcast Management courses.
Before joining the faculty at the University of Bucharest, Professor Balasescu was a news reporter at Tele 7 abc, one of Romania's privately owned television stations. During her stay in Athens, Professor Balasescu shared some of her personal experiences in broadcast production and management with students in the Broadcast Management course. She explained the current structure of Romania's television industry and described her own career path in news and production in the rapidly changing Eastern European media industry.
Professor Balasescu noted that Romanian television stations still face the challenge of developing adequate sources of revenue as the advertising industry develops. The industry's financial situation creates management challenges that the University of Bucharest hopes it will be able to help industry professionals meet.
The University of Bucharest's College of Journalism and Mass Communication has asked Professor Balasescu to develop a graduate broadcast management course that would be appropriate for mid-career professionals. Her visit to the University of Georgia provided an opportunity to examine media management books, journals, and syllabi.
Professor Balasescu's visit was organized and hosted by the James M. Cox Jr. Center for Mass Communication Training and Research in the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Cox Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker asked the Faherty Laboratory faculty for their assistance in ensuring that Professor Balasescu was able to accomplish her objectives during her visit.
In addition to her research on broadcast management instruction, Professor Balasescu also spent time with faculty teaching production courses in the Department of Telecommunications and worked with Cox Center faculty and staff on issues of journalism professionalism and career development.
The Faherty Laboratory has collaborated with the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research on a number of international service and outreach projects over the past two years.
