About the Cox Institute

 

Today's media professional must be able to ensure that newspapers remain journalistically sound and competitive in the increasingly volatile media market. To this end, the James M. Cox, Jr. Institute for Newspaper Management Studies at the University of Georgia, established in 1990 at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, supports education that uniquely prepares the students and professional for management positions and provides funding for applied research that addresses contemporary issues confronting the newspaper industry.

The Cox Institude supports and provides:

  • a publication management program at the Grady College
  • training seminars for student journalist (MSCNE)
  • training seminars for professionals
  • applied research projects that have immediate applicaiton to the industry

The Cox Institute was named for the late James M. Cox, Jr. who headed the Cox Enterprises and Cox Broadcasting Corporation from 1957 until his death in 1974. In memory of her late husband, Mrs. Betty Gage Holland for Atlanta supports the James M. Cox, Jr. Institute for Newspaper Management Studies. Mrs. Holland and her husband, Mr. William Holland, provide support to these public service and outreach units at the Grady College through the Jim Cox Jr. Foundation.
